  • Headstone Materials
    Materials used to make gravestones changed over the years and can sometimes be used to give a
    clue to the age of the stones.
  • Stones made of slate or common field stone was used mostly from 1786 to 1830.
  • Flat topped stones of hard marble made their first appearance between 1830 and 1845.
  • Round, or pointed top, soft marble with cursive style inscriptions between 1845 and 1900.
  • Pylons, columns and exotic style monuments became popular between 1870 and 1900.
  • Zinc or other metal monuments between 1900 to present.
  • Granite stones also became popular from 1900 to present.
  • Concrete markers with bronze plates have been used from 1920 to present.

A Cenotaph is a cemetery marker erected for a person who is not buried there.
An example would be a sailor who was lost at sea.
The family wishes to memorialize him anyway, so they place a cenotaph in the family plot.
